Neutering or Spaying – What’s the Difference?

Why consider a reproductive procedure?

To promote pet health and wellbeing, many owners choose to control their animal’s reproduction. These procedures help prevent unwanted litters, reduce behavioural issues, and lower the risk of serious health problems. But do we really know the difference between spaying and neutering?

What is neutering?

Neutering refers to the surgical removal of reproductive organs – testicles in males, and usually ovaries (and sometimes the uterus) in females. It’s a permanent procedure that not only prevents reproduction but also stops the production of sex hormones.

Benefits of neutering:

  • Eliminates the risk of pregnancy and heat in females.
  • Reduces aggression and territorial behaviour in males.
  • Lower risk of prostate issues and testicular cancer.
  • Decreases the likelihood of reproductive cancers.

What is spaying?

Spaying involves tying or cutting the fallopian tubes in females or the vas deferens in males. The reproductive organs remain, so sex hormones are still produced. As a result, animals may continue to display mating behaviours.

Limitations of spaying:

  • Does not prevent heat or hormonal behaviours.
  • Does not significantly lower cancer risks.
  • Animals may still show sexual behaviours.

Which is right for your pet?

The decision depends on many factors, including your pet’s health, age, and behaviour. Neutering is more comprehensive – it stops hormone production and can improve long-term health and behaviour. Spaying may be considered when hormone preservation is necessary for medical reasons or preference.

Speak to your vet

Every pet is different. That’s why it’s important to talk to your vet before making a decision. They’ll help you choose the safest and most appropriate option for your pet’s specific needs.

Summary

Spaying and neutering are not the same. While both prevent reproduction, they differ in scope and effect. A well-informed decision will help support your pet’s health, comfort, and behaviour for years to come.
